Three years after selling his agency to Corbis, photo editor Marcel Saba is back in business with his new venture, Redux Pictures. Saba hopes the editorial-driven agency can offer an alternative to the bigger agencies and carve out a niche for itself by providing magazines with high-end portraiture, reportage, documentary and feature photography.

Saba says Redux will not be a carbon copy of Saba, his old agency. He plans to keep the number of photographers small, probably topping out around 20, but he will syndicate stock from outside photographers, something he didn’t do at Saba. The agency will focus exclusively on editorial assignments, and will not tackle hard news, entertainment or sports. At least initially, the agency will not go after commercial clients either.

Saba says he’ll do stories on the economy and issues, such as SARS, but he won’t ask a photographer to chase breaking news. "Our focus is to do things after big news happens," he says. "If an airplane crashes we’re not going to jump up and cover it. The wires do a good job of covering that."
